Malindi Transport

Road network

There are two principal roads in Malindi District. The main importance has the 45 km of tarmac road, coming from Mombasa/ Kilifi and going through Malindi town to Garsen (B 8), which runs south north just inland the Coast. The second important road is the 185 km road coming from Malindi town to Sala Gate (Tsavo Road) in east-west direction (C 103).

Minor roads within the Malindi district are

  • The E 899 Watamu – Gede (tarmac road)  – Kakuyuni,

  • The E 895 Msabaha – Ganda – Kisimani – Kwa Alenya – Sabaki Bridge Road,

  • The E 898 Mere – Msabaha Road.

In Malindi town the most important roads are tarmacked:

  • The connection from the town center to Mombasa (Mombasa Road),

  • The  connection from the town center to Lamu (Kenyatta Road,

  • Lamu Road, and

  • A Street from the town center to the large hotel estates south of Malindi (Casuarina Road, Coast Road).

As a result the old city center is completely surrounded by tarmacked roads. Within the old city center the main important street were recently paved under the El Nino Emergency Project. Beside a small part of the street to Ganda the rest of the roads are earth roads. The E 895 and E 898 are today no more than dry season tracks. The C 103 was badly damaged during the El Nino rains of 1987 – 98, but was refurbished under the El Nino Emergency Project in 2000.

Most of the paved roads are under administration of the District.

Bus and Matatu Park

There is one Bus Park that accommodates today 20 buses and 22 matatu.  This park was opened in 1999.  Due to increased business the park has remained busy and may become small in the near future. The new bus and Matatu Park is situated directly beside the Mombasa Road. There are frequent bus connections to Mombasa and Watamu.

Airport

Malindi town has a small airport situated at the western border of the town, directly beside the Mombasa Road. The airport serves 2 times a day flights to Mombasa, Nairobi and Lamu.
