Malindi District was created in December 1996
being the Malindi sub-district of Kilifi
District. It became the seventh district in
Coast Province with the provincial headquarter
in Mombasa.
Within the District there is beside the
Municipal Council of Malindi the Malindi County
Council with its administrative head office in
Malindi Township.
Malindi District is divided into three

Malindi - in the South East and the total
hinterland with an area of 5.259 km2.

Marafa - in the North West with an area of
1.617 km2

Margarini - in the North East with an area
of 729 km2.
Malindi Town is the administrative seat of
Malindi District and Malindi Division.
There are 5 locations under the Municipality
namely Malindi, Ganda, Goshi, Watamu and Gede
Locations. The total number of sub-locations is
21.
The
Town Hall as administrative headquarter of the
Municipal Council of Malindi is located in
Malindi Town at the Casuarina Road near the
Roundabout. Service locations like fire brigade
and refuse collection are situated in app. 200 m
distance also on the Casuarina Road. The office
of the District Commissioner is south-east of
the Uhuru Garden. Other administrative units of
the district are in different buildings in the
town center. West of the Town Hall there is the
Ministry of Works and Land Offices.
